BREVIARUM PARISIENSE. Paris, Sumptibus suis... - Lot 139 - Giquello
BREVIARUM PARISIENSE. Paris, Sumptibus suis ediderunt Bibliopolae usum Parisiensium, 1778. 4 volumes large in-8, red long-grained morocco, gilt border formed by two double fillets crossing at the corners, decorated with a large garland of pampers and fleurs-de-lis at the corners, gilt coat of arms in the centre, smooth spine richly ornamented, interior greek, gilt edges (Gaudreau) A copy in morocco with the arms of Louis XVIII, covered with an attractive binding decorated by Gaudreau. Each volume bears the label of the bookbinder, Rue St-Jacques N°110 in Paris. A handwritten note on a cover specifies that the copy was offered by King Louis XVIII himself: This breviary belonged to Monsieur de Saunhac Belcastel bishop of Perpignan from 1822 to 1853, a former emigrant, the last survivor of the clergy of the old regime. King Louis XVIII had given it to him on the occasion of his elevation. Only the King's household had a Parisian breviary bound with the royal coat of arms, and the copy was never used. [...] Given by the bishop of Perpignan in 1904. Fezensac. The copy then belonged to Jules-Louis-Marie de Carsalade du Pont, bishop of Perpignan from 1900 to 1932, nicknamed "the bishop of the Catalans". Originally from the Gers, he was a canon of Auch and founded the Archaeological Society of the Gers. It also passed through the hands of Philippe de Montesquieu-Fezensac, Duke of Fezensac (1843-1913), politician and senator of the Gers, whose armorial bookplate can be found in the volumes. The supplement announced in this handwritten note is not attached here. Some foxing.
