BALBASTRE (Claude)
Harpsichord pieces. First book. Dedicated to Madame de Caze, by Mr. Balbastre Organist of the Parish Church of St. Roch. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, ruë d'Argenteuil dans la maison neuve St. Roch et aux addresses ordinaires, s.d. [c. 1759]. Manuscript in-4, 1 f. and 29 pp. in tortoiseshell calf, mention Me Anne Aragon in gilt capitals on the first plate, smooth mute spine (Binding of the time). An 18th-century manuscript copy of the harpsichord scores of Claude Balbastre (1724-1799), a virtuoso of his time. Originally from Dijon, this pupil of Rameau became one of the leading harpsichordists and composers of the second half of the 18th century. He made his debut at the Concert spirituel in 1753 with an organ concerto that was highly acclaimed. He was appointed organist of the church of Saint-Roch, in succession to Landrin, organist to the king, on March 26, 1756, and composed for this parish his noëls in variations which he performed every year at midnight mass until 1762. [...] Accepted as organist of the cathedral in 1760, he also obtained the patent of organist of Monsieur in 1776 and kept this job until the Revolution (Fétis, Biographie universelle des musiciens). Balbastre was also Queen Marie-Antoinette's harpsichord master. The Pièces de clavecin were published in Paris in 1759.
