CATALOGUES OF PROHIBITED BOOKS. - Catalogus librorum rejectorum per concessum censurae. Vienna, 1754. 84 pp. - Continuatio secunda catalogi librorum rejectorum... Vienna, 1756. 32 pp. - Continuatio tertia catalogi librorum rejectorum... Vienna, 1757. 34 pp. Set of 3 volumes in-12, paperbound, paper-covered spines, in a modern cardboard box. First official catalogue of prohibited books published in Austria. It was printed in application of the laws concerning the printing and trade of books promulgated by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780). Before Maria Theresa's censorship reform, there had been no catalogues of prohibited books issued directly by the political authorities. The Church or its local representatives exercised censorship on an ad hoc basis, more or less in agreement with the government. Only the Congregation of the Index in Rome published the list of books that the Church forbade the faithful to read. [The first of these catalogues dates from 1754 and is entitled Catalogus Librorum rejectorum per Concessum Censurae. The only known original copy is now in Dresden. There were three annual supplements in 1755, 1756 and 1757. All these catalogues contain the titles of prohibited books whose themes are against the Church, the State and morality, the whole forming an unchanging censorial trilogy, to which only minor themes are grafted (Jean-Pierre Lavandier, "La censure du livre en Autriche 1740-1792", in L'Identification du texte clandestin aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, n°7 de la Lettre clandestine, 1998, pp. 259-287). Without the annual supplement of 1755. Light staining to the title page of the first volume and the whole of the third volume.
