MANUSCRIT. - Quadratum Melitense. S.l.n.d.... - Lot 113 - Giquello
MANUSCRIT. - Quadratum Melitense. S.l.n.d. [18th century]. Manuscript in-8 of 15 unencumbered pages, stapled, 19th century cover. Description and instructions for a "mathematical magic square" called Quadratum Melitense, accompanied by a handwritten plate depicting it. Copied in brown ink, with red capitals, the manuscript is written in Latin with parts in German in a tighter script. It is signed at the end by Vitali. In an introductory text, the author, offering the reader (Amice lector) the key and the rules to find the secret numbers of the magic square, reveals that the latter was invented by a great arithmetician of Malta, killed in Rome or in Spain for having refused to reveal its secret.
