THE VANGED INJUSTICE Or Harlequin's Noces... - Lot 111 - Giquello
THE VANGED INJUSTICE Or Harlequin's Noces with Columbine, all by magic. Pantomime play performed on December 10, 1747 by the Lords of the Palatine Court in the Great Hall of the Palace on the occasion of the birthday of His Serene Highness the Elector [sic] Palatine. Mannheim, Court Printing by Matthieu Oberholzer, 1747. Small booklet in-4, 31 pages, paperback, marbled paper cover, in modern cardboard case (Binding of the time). Extremely rare harlequinade, printed by the Court of Palatinate's printing press in a small number of copies. Charles-Theodore, Elector of Bavaria, had welcomed in 1746 in Mannheim, for the Court's entertainments, a troupe of French actors and dancers known as "Comédiens de son Altesse Sérénissime Electorale". Few records survive of the artists in this company, but it is known that the director of the ballets was named Paul de Floris and that two dancers, named Gardel and Duruel, were members. The history of the Comédie française under Charles-Théodore is intimately connected with the history of the Pantomime and the Ballet. Not only were most of the Court dancers French, but the books of the works they applauded were written in our language and sometimes borrowed from our comic authors. [...] Harlequinades seem to have been particularly popular. The nobility did not disdain to play them themselves: among those that have come down to us, there are several that were performed by the "Cavaliers de la Cour" (Olivier, Les Comédiens français dans les cours d'Allemagne au XVIIIe siècle, première série, p. 47 et seq, and p. 110). The prologue summarizes the story of this pantomime: Harlequin, in love with Columbine, is chased out of the city of Gaberne and condemned to spend the rest of his life in a desert; this sad situation forces him to have recourse to a magician named Albocant who shows him the secret of making himself invisible... A paperback copy, as issued.
