TRIAL OF THE WITCHES OF LYON. - Extract from... - Lot 110 - Giquello
TRIAL OF THE WITCHES OF LYON. - Extract from the registers of the Parliament of Dijon. S.l. [at the end] : Dijon, Pierre de Saint, s.d. [1745]. Plaquette in-4 of 12 pages, modern hardback. One of the most famous witch trials of the 18th century. Judgment and published account by the Parliament of Dijon of the trial known as the "sorcerers of Lyon", which lasted from 1742 to 1745, indicting some twenty persons accused of superstitious practices, impiety & sacrilege. Among the accused were a draughtsman, a merchant, a silk worker, a manufacturer of gold and silver fabrics, etc. Henri Beaune, a Dijon historian and lawyer who published the first book on this surprising judicial episode in 1868, reminds us that "The account we are about to read is not a fantasy account. It is borrowed entirely from a criminal procedure, the trace of which still exists in the Archives of the Parliament of Burgundy and in the rich library of the castle of Grosbois-en-Montagne. It had such a resounding effect in the province in the 18th century that today the memory of the Wizards of Lyon survives the last witnesses of their bloody expiation. At the top of the first page, this mention in the ink of the time: sacrilege.
