IMPRESSION OF SQUADRON. - Orders, which will... - Lot 107 - Giquello
IMPRESSION OF SQUADRON. - Orders, which will be observed at the exit of the Rade de Toulon, by the Squadrons of the two Crowns under the Orders of Mr. Decourt, Lieutenant General of the Naval Armies. S.l.n.d. [at the end]: On board the flagship Le Terrible, 8 February 1744. Large bifolio of 4 pages. Extremely rare document, printed on board the ship "Le Terrible". Parès, the specialist of squadron printing, does not mention any document printed on board this ship. He only says that he has discovered proof that admiral De Court, in January 1744, had insisted, with the intendant of the port of Toulon, that a printer be taken on board the squadron, which was done (cf. Parès, Imprimeries d'escadre, pp. 115-116). The document is dated February 8, 1744, the date on which the ships of the French and Spanish squadrons set sail from Toulon to confront the English fleet. The latter was defeated on February 22, during the battle of Cap Sicié, thus freeing Toulon from the English blockade. At the end, handwritten signature of Claude-Élisée de Court de La Bruyère (1666-1752), commander of the French squadron. (Magali Vène, "Les impressions d'escadre françaises..." in Le livre maritime au Siècle des Lumières [The Maritime Book in the Age of Enlightenment], 2005, p. 81.
