DUGAS DE BOIS SAINT-JUST (Pierre)
Autograph manuscripts. 18th century (c. 1722-1767). About forty items, preserved in a modern half-calf case in the old style, with a red morocco title-piece on the first cover. Important set of autograph manuscripts by Pierre Dugas de Bois Saint-Just, member of an ancient family of Lyon whose name is intimately linked to the administrative and cultural history of the city (Morel de Voleine, Familles lyonnaises, 1866). Born in 1701 in Lyon and died in Thurins in 1767, Pierre Dugas was president of the Court of Coins, provost of merchants in 1751, auditor and member of the Academy of Lyon. Passionate about literature, history and bibliophily, he composed a large number of prose memoirs and verse pieces that he read at the Academy. These manuscripts total about 400 pages: literary writings from his youth (bouquets, songs, rondeaux, a letter written to his father at the age of 15, couplets written by M. Dugas, captain in the Picardy regiment, on several ladies of the city, Destiny and the Moon, the Dugasiade, etc.), the speech on his reception at the Academy in 1722, and drafts of some twenty memoirs with erasures and corrections on various subjects (on ancient chariots, on the intervention of the gods in the epic poem, on the epistolary style, considerations on Salluste, a dissertation on bibliomania, etc.).
