ROYAL HANDWRITTEN MASSES. - Missa Regia.... - Lot 93 - Giquello
ROYAL HANDWRITTEN MASSES. - Missa Regia. Primi toni. - Mass of the second tone. - Mass of the fifth tone. - Mass of the sixth tone. - In Festo sanctae Joannae Franciscae Fremiot de Chantal, ordinis sanctimonalium visitationis S. Mariae fundatricis. S.l. [18th century]. Manuscript in-folio of 50 pages, vellum, title in later ink on the spine (Binding of the time). Nice handwritten copy of these 4 masses in plainchant by the great composer Henri du Mont (1610-1684). Of Walloon origin, Henri du Mont learned to play music and the organ in Liège. Amazed by his rapid progress, his parents sent him to Paris to perfect his talents, where he arrived around 1638. In 1639 he was awarded the organ of St. Paul's and soon after became one of the masters of the King's and Queen's music. He died in 1684 and was buried in the church of Saint-Paul, of which he had been the organist for forty-five years. Dumont wrote five masses in plainchant, known as messes royales, which are sung on solemn feasts in several churches in France: these are his best works; their character is noble and solemn (Fétis, Biographie universelle des musiciens). Manuscript in black and red ink, each page with seven musical staves. Lower cover repaired.
