GARCIA (Francesc Vicens)
[Poetic work]. S.l.n.d. [end of the 17th century]. Manuscript in-4, about 125 pages, marbled half-calf, spine decorated, red title page (modern binding in the old style). A late 17th-century manuscript copy of the poetic work of the Catalan poet Francesc Vicens Garcia, "the first great writer of Catalan Baroque literature", better known as the "Rector de Vallfogona" (see Albert Rossich, Francesc Vicens Garcia: història i mite del rector de Vallfogona, 1987) Born in Tortosa in 1579, Francesc Vicens Garcia was ordained a priest in 1605 and appointed secretary to the bishop of Barcelona, Francesc Robuster, before becoming Rector of Vallfogona de Riucorb, in the province of Tarragona, the former lordship of the Knights Templar of Catalonia. He composed many poems and a play, but only the sermon he gave in 1621 in Girona Cathedral for the death of King Philip III of Castile was printed during his lifetime. He died in Vallfogona de Riucorb in 1623. His poems often deal with love and women, sometimes with obscene and coarse language. Frequently imitated at the time, they gave rise to the term "Vallfogonism". His work was partially published for the first time in 1703, under the title La Armonia del Parnàs. It was condemned and banned by the Inquisition in 1770. Corner of the first nine leaves restored.
