LE ROYER (Jacques)
Treatise on influences. Divided into two parts. Avranches, Nicolas Motays, 1677. In-8, stiff vellum, printed decoration on the boards and on the smooth spine, metal hook at the bottom of the first board (Binding of the time). Desgraves, XII, Normandie, Avranches, p. 105, n°19. - Frère, t. I, p. 113. First collective edition, extremely rare, of inventions and scientific research by Jacques Le Royer, a Norman lawyer who worked in Rouen in the 17th century and was interested in the study of physics and alchemy. It contains the Baston universel (pp. 3-38), the Art des arts & des sciences, ou des nouvelles inventions (pp. 43-86), the Hydraulic Perpetual Movement, or the Rise of Water by itself (pp. 87-96), the True Cause of Comets (pp. 97-111), as well as the Treatise on Influences, divided into two parts and dealing with the influences of the heavens, of the stars, of the occult virtues of earthly beings, of the magnetism, of the inclination of the stars towards metals, minerals and waters, etc. (pp. 113-359). (pp. 113-359). Amazing and rare astronomical binding invented by Le Royer, the boards covered with geometrical figures, lines for calculations, etc., and the spine decorated with five allegorical figures and mottos alluding to the King, the Dauphin and the author's patrons. Figures printed on paper (dials) and glued to the back covers complete the set. How to use this binding correctly remains rather obscure. A specimen of this binding is reproduced in catalogue XII of the Gumuchian bookshop (1929). Old wet stamp on the title. One hinge restored.
