MARIOTTE (Edme)
Essays of physics or Memoirs to serve the Science of natural things. Paris, Estienne Michallet, 1679. 3 parts in one volume in-12, granite calf, spine ornamented, spotted edges (Binding of the time). First edition. The volume contains only the first three parts, out of four, all in separate pagination with a particular title: De la végétation des plantes, De la nature de l'air, et Du chaud et du froid. Born in Dijon in 1620, died in Paris in 1684, Mariotte was one of the great forerunners of the experimental method. Open to the observation of all the phenomena of nature, he worked on gases, on plants, on the deformation of solids, on sight, on hydrodynamics, etc. He was one of the first members of the Academy of Sciences, which he joined in 1666, the year of its foundation. The second essay, on the nature of air, is one of Mariotte's most important works: in it, he explains the law of compressibility of gases, known since then as the Boyle-Mariotte law. Handwritten bookplate dated 1789 on one of the endpapers and the title of the first essay. Worn corners.
