Complete suite of 14 beautiful intaglio plates by Gérard Audran, representing the genii and their emblems arranged in the corners of the fresco of the Loggia of Psyche painted by Raphael in the Villa Farnesina in Rome around 1517-1518. This suite is dedicated to the painter Charles le Brun, thanks to whom Audran obtained the protection of Colbert. All engravings bear the mention Cum. Priv. Regis. and are signed R.V.I. (for Raphaël Urbino invenit) and G.A.F. (for Gérard Audran fecit). Gérard Audran (1640-1703), one of the most illustrious artists of his dynasty, travelled to Italy in the 1660s and 1670s and perfected his technique in Carlo Maratta's studio in Rome. He reproduced several compositions by Raphael, Peter of Cortona and the Dominiquin. Appointed ordinary engraver to the king, he entered the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in May 1674. Marginal tear repaired on two plates. Spine redone.
