BOYLE (Robert)
Defensio Doctrinae de Elatere & Gravitate Aeris, In Novis ipsus physico-mechanicis Experimentis, Adversus Objectiones Francisci Lini. London, J. Redmayne, Impensis Johann Crook, 1663. In-8, half brown calf, spine ornamented, red title-piece (Modern binding in the old taste). The discovery of the law of compressibility of gases (PV=k). First edition in Latin and first separate edition with folding plate (cf. Dibner, n°142 for the 1662 edition). In this publication, first published in English as an appendix to his New Experiments Physico-Mechanical touching the Spring of the Air (Oxford, 1662), the Irish physicist and chemist Robert Boyle (1627-1691) presents the results of his experiments in thermodynamics, demonstrates the relationship between the pressure and the volume of a gas, and establishes the law that today bears the name of the Boyle-Mariotte law (Edme Mariotte, a French physicist, was the one who, independently, made the same discovery a few years later) Some faded leaves.
