PECQUET (Jean)
Experimenta nova anatomica. Paris, Sébastien Cramoisy and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1651. In-8, half red morocco, smooth spine decorated (Modern binding). Garrison & Morton, n°1095. - Heirs of Hippocrates, n°543. First edition, with 5 copper-engraved figures in the text and a full-page plate included in the pagination. A book of great importance for the knowledge of the circulatory, lymphatic and blood systems, and the process of absorption of nutrients at the time of digestion. Born in Dieppe in 1622 and died in Paris in 1674, Jean Pecquet studied medicine and anatomy in Montpellier and in Paris. It is said that at the age of 23 he performed an autopsy on a marquise to whose service he had been attached for five years. He was the physician of Nicolas Fouquet, the famous superintendent, who also became his protector, and that of Madame de Sévigné. In his Experimenta nova anatomica, Pecquet exposes his discovery of the chyle receptacle and the thoracic canal, hitherto unknown to anatomists. Also included in this volume is a dissertation by the author on the movements of blood and chyle by respiration, muscular contraction, arterial beat, etc., supported by experiments on vacuum and air pressure. A short-margined copy, the binder's knife having touched most of the running headings and the edge of the board.
