CARLI (Fernando)
Templi Vaticani typus divisus in partes duas, et sectiones novem. Rome, Ex sacro Vaticano Palatio, Kal. Martiis, 1621. Printed folio poster, folded in four and bound in modern bradel cardboard. Description of the detailed plan of a book on the Vatican basilica that the author was writing at the request of Pope Paul V, which was never published. Dated from Rome, Ex sacro Vaticano Palatio, where the author resided, the poster contains a notice in which he reports on the progress of his work and that of Martino Ferrabosco, an architect and engraver who had been working for five years in the Vatican on the plates of the Libro de l'architettura di San Pietro nel Vaticano. Secretary to Cardinal Paolo Sfondrato, Ferdinando (Ferrante) Carli (1578-1641) frequented the artistic circles of Rome and forged personal relationships with the great painters of the time. "Il Carli coltivò in proprio studi attinenti la storiografia artistica. Descrisse anche la basilica vaticana: son citati nelle fonti un Typus Vaticani Templi (Roma 1621), che risulta irreperibile, e un Templum Vaticanum expressum (Roma 1622, che è certo indicazione erronea). The opera remained unedited" (Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, online). Very rare.
