VALLES (Francisco)
De iis, quae scripta sunt Physicé in libris sacris, sive de sacra Philosophia, liber singularis. Turin, Niccolo Bevilacqua heirs, 1587. In-4, soft vellum, laces, calligraphic title on spine, blue spotted edges (17th century binding). First edition of the main work of Francisco Vallés, Spanish physician and philosopher born in Covarrubias in 1524 and died in Burgos in 1592. It is dedicated to King Philip II of Spain, whose personal physician the author was, a position in which he had succeeded Vesalius. In this work, Vallés advocates reason to study natural phenomena and deals with the genesis of the world and the knowledge of things, the human soul and the secrets of nature, philosophy and metaphysics, astrology and esoteric phenomena. One of the most successful books by Vallés is the one on medicine and the Bible: De Sacra Philosophia. [...] [It] is and ordered exegesis, explanation and commentary of the Bible, starting with the study of the chapters of Genesis (cf. Concetta Pennuo, "Francisco Vallés' De Sacra Philosophia: a Medical Reading of the Bible"). Antique vellum copy, in which 10 manuscript leaves from the 17th century containing comments on the subjects treated in the book have been added at the head. Wet stamp on the title and scratched manuscript bookplate.
