CORROZET (Gilles)
Le Parnasse des poètes françois modernes, contenant leurs plus riches & graves Sentences, Discourses, Descriptions, & doctes enseignemens. Recueillies par feu Gilles Corrozet. Paris, Galiot Corrozet, 1571. In-8, olive green morocco, framed with gilt filets, smooth spine with title in full, interior roulette, gilt edges (Modern binding in the old style). Lachèvre, pp. 88-90. Very rare first edition of this poetic collection. This Parnassus is not an anthology. Verses truncated, cut, put end to end: Corrozet apologized for his audacity with tranquility. He did this to "better link and join the meaning of poetry and sentences". [...] But Corrozet had, in addition, the ambition to forge, by means of his quotations, a vast moral lesson (Barbier, II, Ronsard, n°78). The work contains numerous poems by the poets of the Pléiade (Baïf, Du Bellay, Jodelle, Pontus de Tyard, etc.) and in particular Ronsard, the Prince of poets, who takes the lion's share of the citations (174). Some shorter leaves.
