STRADA (Jacopo)
Epitome Thesauri antiquitatum. Tiguri [Zurich], Andrea Gesner, 1557. In-8, fawn calf, triple cold fillet around the boards, border drawn by two gilt fillets, small iron in the corners, gilt emblem in the centre, spine decorated, edges gilt and partially chased (Period binding). Second Latin edition of this work by the Italian antiquarian Jacopo Strada (1515-1588), first published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in 1553. Dedicated to Johann Jacob Fugger, protector of the arts and sciences and member of the famous German Fugger family, it is profusely illustrated with engravings on a black background in the text depicting medals and coins bearing the effigies of emperors from Julius Caesar to Charles V. A copy bound for Robert Dudley (1532-1588), Earl of Leicester, first favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. This famous bibliophile was, after Thomas Wotton, and outside the royal family, the most important patron of bookbindings in England in the 16th century. His coat of arms consists of a standing bear chained to a tree trunk, here accompanied by the initials R and D. The handwritten bookplate on the verso of the title is most certainly that of W. Keymer, an 18th century publisher based in Colchester. From the Charles Van der Elst library (bookplate). A handwritten note dated 1910 on the upper flyleaf concerns Robert Dudley and his coat of arms. Smudging at the head of the volume and on the edges of the last few leaves. Spine rebacked, stains on boards, modern edgewear.
