Published in the same year as the original German edition, it is illustrated with 66 woodcuts in the text, 7 of which are full-page, depicting the anatomy and organs of women, obstetrical instruments, foetuses, anatomical anomalies, monsters, etc. The plate printed on the back of the title shows the room of the woman giving birth. Jacob Rueff, or Rüff (1500-1558), a physician and lithotomist who practiced in Zurich, was one of the most illustrious obstetricians of his time. His work, translated and republished several times until the end of the 17th century, marked an important date in the history of medicine and had a great influence on the practice of obstetrics in the West.
