MICHE (M. L.)
Amsterdam, Jean Janssen, 1636. In-12 of (3) ff., 209 pp. blue morocco, decorated in the style of Du Seuil, spine decorated, gilt lace inside, edges gilt on marble (Lortic 1851). First edition. Rare manual of civility printed in Holland in the 17th century, offering a variety of useful compliments in all circumstances. The foreigner concerned with manners could learn how to curtsy to a prince, a lady or a princess, what to do when meeting a friend in the street, how to invite a friend to dinner, how to sit at the table, how to wash one's hands or apologize after the meal, how to write a letter of gratitude, farewell, regret, etc. Enthusiastically, the author challenges the reader, "Use it, enjoy it: you will get a soüeve smell from it to the great contentment of your spirits." A delightful copy in Lortic binding. It comes from the Lefèvre d'Allerange (1851) and Robert de Billy (engraved bookplate) libraries. It appeared in a catalogue of the Potier bookshop (1860, n° 2240). (Arbour, no. 21323: only one copy cited, in Wolfenbüttel.)
