MAROT (Clément)
Les Œuvres. Lyon, for Jean Gauthier, 1597. In-16 of (16) ff., the last one blank, 796 pp. and (1) blank f. : black morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornamented spine, red morocco lining, inner lace, gilt edges on marbling (binding circa 1700). Rare Lyon edition printed in italics: it is the last one published in the 16th century, after the one given in Niort in 1596. (Baudrier, Bibliographie lyonnaise, I, p. 178, only one copy cited.- Mayer, n° 233.) A choice copy, ruled, in morocco lined probably by Boyet. It is a perfect representative of the copies pampered by bibliophiles at the end of the 17th century, highlighted by Jean-Marc Chatelain in La Bibliothèque de l'honnête homme (2003, pp. 126-144), Clément Marot enjoying a special status in the libraries of the time. "Marot's work offers an accomplished example of the "dilection" text of the honest man on which the practices of distinction of the "curious" were grafted at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. [...] Just as there must have been Rabelaisian collections, which it seems possible to surmise from the known remains of La Vieuville's cabinet or of the amateur to whom the bindings dated 1695 and 1696 belonged, so at the end of the 17th century there were book cabinets bringing together series of successive editions of Marot's works." M. Chatelain lists fifty-three copies of Marot's poems preserved in lined bindings, mostly attributable to Boyet. This is a significant number, with a marked propensity for the so-called Rocher edition of 1545 (eight copies) and for the "modern" edition of Moetjens published in 1700 (seven copies) - the other 16th-century editions being represented by one or two copies each. The present copy appears in this list under No. 44. It can be found in the Belin catalogues of 1906 (no. 421) and 1910 (no. 695), and in a sale in Rouen on 14 March 1990 (no. 70). The copy does not contain the Psalms of David (151 pages and 3 table sheets), printed with separate pagination, sometimes attached or bound in a separate volume.
