JOVERUS (Franciscus)
Sanctiones ecclesiasticae tam synodicae quam pontificiae, in tres classes distinctae. Paris, Oudin Petit, 1555. Fort in-folio of (37) ff. (37) ff. [of 38], 220 ff. 148 ff. and 192 ff, the last one blank : brown calf, three fillets in frame, covers with a large gilt decoration consisting of interlacing, large scrolls and large floral foliage, all arranged around a large central oval cartouche charged with a composition drawn with straight and curved fillets and small azure irons, a large part of the decoration standing out on a large sieved background, sown with flowers in three compartments, abbreviated title stamped in gilt capitals in a small cartouche at the bottom of the first plate, spine decorated with a cross-stripe of fillets, gilt and chased edges, modern black morocco slipcase (period binding). First edition. It was printed on two columns by Jean Savetier for the Parisian bookseller Oudin Petit, whose large typographical mark adorns the title. Work by the Franciscan Francisco Jover, of Valencia, theologian of the University of Paris, collecting and explaining the various synodal and pontifical decrees. (Rodriguez, Biblioteca Valentina, 1747, p. 135.) Spectacular sixteenth-century Parisian binding with a large decoration of interlacing and scrolls of leather. The decoration is a remarkable example of the art of bookbinding of the period. It unfolds around a large central oval medallion, charged with a composition of straight and curved fillets, punctuated here and there with gilt and azure irons: The design is reminiscent of the Persian-inspired scrollwork found on some bindings made for Grolier (see the binding reproduced in the Esmerian catalogue, I, 1972, no. 71, and the one reproduced by Nixon as no. 45 in Sixteenth Century gold-tooled Bookbindings in the Pierpont Morgan Library). The lightness of the central decoration contrasts with the rest of the structure, which consists of a large cartouche in the form of cut leather, drawn by wide interlacing and two massive scrolls, the whole riddled with gilded dots or adorned in places with a scattering of florets. The sponsor of the binding is unfortunately unknown; however, the richness and complexity of its decoration, as well as the manner of pushing the title in gilt capitals in a small cartouche on the first board, are all elements that bring it closer to the bindings executed for the amateurs of the time such as Grolier or Thomas Mahieu. A fine copy, from the libraries of Eugène von Wassermann (1921, n° 1001) and Cortland F. Bishop (1948, n° 289). Label of the Pierre Berès bookshop. The introductory leaf *4 is missing and two preface leaves are shorter. Mottling on the edges of some leaves, small worm gallery affecting some introductory leaves. Small paper restoration at the foot of a front endpaper. Fine restorations to the headpieces and corners. The decoration of crossbars on the spine appears later.
