[Comoediae]. Paris, Simon de Colines et François Estienne, 1538-1539. 6 works bound in a volume in-4 of 26, 22, 26, 26, 28 and 26 ff. : red morocco, decoration of large curved scrolls and interlacing treated in reserve on a gilt background with dotted lines, drawing a large empty central compartment, ornamented spine, inner lace, gilt edges (Capé). Rare complete collection of the six comedies of Terence: editions of "classical leaves" intended for students, from the presses of Simon de Colines and François Estienne. The six plays, the only ones that have come down to us from the Latin playwright, each have a particular title and a separate pagination: - Adelphi. Simon de Colines & François Estienne, 1539. (Renouard, Colines, p. 318.) - Hecyra. Simon de Colines & François Estienne, 1539. (Renouard, Colines, p. 318.) - Phormio. [circa 1539]. - Andria. François Estienne, 1538. - Eunuchus. Paris, François Estienne, 1538. - Heautontimorumenos. Paris, Simon de Colines & François Estienne, 1539. The layout of the texts, printed in italics, is very airy, which allowed the students to write their own version or the Dictata magistri in the line spaces. The texts are accompanied by the arguments of the Latin grammarian Aelius Donatus, printed in very small Roman characters known as "mignonnes". Simon de Colines succeeded Henri Estienne in 1520, whose widow he married, and became the tutor of his three sons with whom he worked regularly, especially with the eldest, François. Superb and astonishing binding by Capé decorated in the style of the 16th century. It is the perfect copy, without the coat of arms of course, of the binding with the arms of Henri III which covers the Organon of Claude Auberi (1584) preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The copy, which is ruled, is quoted by Brunet (V, col. 713): it comes from the library of Félix Solar (1860, n° 1581). (Moreau, V, n° 1084.- Renouard, Estienne, p. 98, n° 12.- Renouard, Colines, p. 318.- Cent reliures de la Bibliothèque nationale, 1914, pl. LXXV : reproduction of the binding executed for Henri III which served as a model).
