[PEROTTUS (Nicolaus)]
Cornucopiae, sive lingue latine commentarii. Toscolano, Alessandro Paganini, April 1522. In-4 of 50 ff. and 1268 columns: half sow's skin cold-stamped, decorated with large roulettes, one of which is decorated with palmettes and the other with several small bust portraits (King David, various saints, etc.), the remaining part of the boards covered with a sheet of ancient manuscript on vellum, three-ribbed spine, blue edges (period binding). Rare printing by Alessandro Paganini done with the small italic of his invention. The text is printed in two columns, with 70 lines per page; the extensive index, which occupies more than 80 pages at the beginning of the volume, is arranged in several narrow columns. Beautiful title frame engraved on wood and ornamented with interlacing in the oriental style: it will be used the following year by Paganini to decorate the title of his editions of Cicero, Ovid or even Terence. Active from 1509 to 1538, the typographer worked in Salo and Venice, but mainly in Toscolano, near Brescia. He moved there in 1517, thus founding the first lasting typographic establishment in the city. In addition to printing in his own typeface, he is known to have published in Venice an edition of the Koran in Arabic script that was destroyed. The Cornucopiae of Niccolo Perotto (1429-1480), archbishop of Siponto and professor of theology, Greek and Latin at the University of Bologna, were first published in Venice in 1489: they are commentaries on the Latin language and the first book of Martial's epigrams. A fine copy in contemporary binding. From the library of J. Harsen Purdy, with armorial bookplate. Stamp of a German Franciscan congregation at the foot of the title. Stains, spotting and foxing to a few leaves. Small crack without missing on the edge of folio N7. (Brunet, t. IV, col. 506. - Fondazione Valle delle Cartiere, Alessandro Paganini, tipografo a Toscolano, 2008, n° 17.)
