Cabbage leaves with a lion Ateliers de la... - Lot 145 - Giquello
Cabbage leaves with a lion Ateliers de la Marche Second half of the 16th century H.183 x 150 cm Wool warp, wool and silk weft A furious lion attacks a hound ready to defend itself under the eye of many birds and squirrels nesting in or on the large tendrils of cabbage leaves. In the upper part of the panel, a village with an aqueduct and tiny characters which remind us of the human presence and indicate that the distance is great. An almost identical tapestry, entitled The Lion, appears p.19 in the work Les Tapisseries du Canton de Salers; it is classified as Historic Monument and is preserved in the castle of Trémolière, in Salers. Only the village differs in the upper part of this tapestry. It is very interesting to imagine that these identical cabbage leaves were however ordered with a different village, which could probably represent the village of the commissioner. Woven in wool and silk, it is a beautiful fragment with an almost complete composition (we refer to the tapestry quoted above), but which presents some wear and old restorations, in particular in the brown tones
