Head of a man wearing a hairstyle composed... - Lot 98 - Giquello
Head of a man wearing a hairstyle composed of small curly locks above the forehead and a short beard delimited by a slight overhang. The part located behind the ears is less worked, which suggests the presence of a background or another element located behind the head. For example, one can think of a criophoric Hermes (carrying a ram on his shoulders) which is a kind of prototype of the iconography of the Good Shepherd in vogue during the Early Christian period. It may also be a Hermes moschophore (calf carrier). White marble. Beige colouring in depth and traces of deposition. Gaps, reshaping of the sculpture (?) and strong cleaning. Greek art, 5th century B.C. or Roman H. 25 cm Provenance: Acquired before 1960, remained in the family since.
