Afo cup holder, Nigeria Hardwood with black-brown... - Lot 147 - Giquello
Afo cup holder, Nigeria Hardwood with black-brown patina, traces of lye blue, H. 54 cm Provenance: Galerie Argiles, Félicia Dialossin, Paris, 1971 Former collection Jan Lundberg, Sweden Galerie Rachlin-Lemarie, Paris, 1999 Exhibition: "Afrikanst", Malmö Konsthall, Sweden, 1986 Reproduced in the exhibition catalogue, page 86, fig. 109 Rare female Afo effigy, the powerful body firmly inscribed on a short circular base. The bust is marked by a very rounded umbilicus, with the breasts hanging high on the shoulders. The face, decorated like the abdomen with numerous scarifications, is detailed with sobriety. At the back of the skull, a braid is the only detail of the hairstyle, the representation of a cup at the top of the composition. Linked to the cult of fertility, this statue received offerings from women during the annual Aya ceremony. Very few examples of this type are known to date.
