[Spain]. [Andalusia]. [Cartas ejecutorias]. Sobrecarta de la real executoria de los privilexios... del Castillo litigado contra [el] juicio en la chanzelleria de Granada en tiempo del emperador Carlos V...suffragia de 13 de noviembre 1535 (date much faded, restored from document). Agreement given by the Council of the Kingdom to postpone the payment of 1500 gold doubloons imposed on the city of Alcalá la Real and its suburb of Castillo de Locubin. In Spanish, illuminated manuscript on parchment. Spain [Andalusia], Granada, document dated 13 November 1535. 11 ff, including an outer bifeuillet on the cover, rounded gothic script in dark brown ink, ruled in pale red ink, text in 35 lines (justification: 130 x 194 mm), with 7 initials decorated in blue with white highlights on a dark red background with a gilt scroll decoration, 2 HISTORICAL INITIALS (fol. 2v: large historiated initial "D"; fol. 5: small historiated initial "I"), painted coat of arms of the city of Alcalá la Real two leaves with illuminated borders, decoration of coloured acanthus leaves, flowers, vases and colonnades, gold discs and scrolls in black ink, painted coat of arms at bottom of page (fol. 2). Unbound, sewn booklet held together with coloured braided cords. Size: 225 x 325 mm. This illuminated document is a "sobrecarta", i.e. an agreement of the Council of the Kingdom which revises a first "carta exsecutoria" (spelling in this document; letters patent) imposed on the city of Alcalá la Real and its suburb of Castillo de Locubin dated February 2, 1532 (fol. 3) concerning the payment of 1,500 gold doubloons, which was served on Fernando de Aranda, "regidor de la dicha ciudad". This sobrecarta is the result of a request ("por su peticion") from Juan de Aranda, "jurado de la dicha ciudad de Alcala la Real". The de Aranda family was very important locally. Among the descendants of Juan de Aranda, there is another of the same name, Juan de Aranda (born in Castillo de Locubin, 1600-1654) who was an architect and whose uncle Ginés Martinez de Aranda was the master builder of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The uncle and the nephew carried out works for the church of Saint Peter the Apostle of Castillo de Locubin. The coat of arms on the back of folio 2v at the bottom of the page is that of the city and stronghold of Alcalá la Real, a municipality in the province of Jaen in Andalusia. Once part of the Muslim kingdom, Alcalá la Real was definitively taken over by Ferdinand III of Castile and later by Alfonso XI of Castile, who in the 14th century founded a very important abbey under royal patronage, one of the main ecclesiastical institutions in Andalusia, independent of any episcopal power. This "Sobrecarta" is illustrated with two historiated initials, the first (fol. 2v) depicting the emperor Charles V, shown with his sword and globe; the second more discreetly depicts St John the Baptist (fol. 5), probably the patron saint of Juan de Aranda (note the mention "San Juan" in the margin).
