Antonio di Girolamo (1479-1556)
Initial "D" historiated. Trinity. Italy, Florence, ca. 1500-1520. Music noted on back, watermarked initial. Size: 125 x 145 mm (framed). Mottling on the back; four small holes, one of which is larger in the ornate background. Taken from a choir book, this beautiful historiated initial features Renaissance decoration, with acanthus foliage motifs interspersed with inlays of precious stones. This miniature is attributable to Antonio di Girolamo, a Florentine artist admitted to the Guild of Illuminators of San Zenobio in 1492 (Compagnia della purificazione e di San Zanobi), who worked for the Duomo of Florence in the 1520s. A historiated initial "G" depicting the Coronation of the Virgin and attributed to Antonio di Girolamo was described and sold at Sotheby's, London, July 6, 2006, lot 22. It has several stylistic features in common, notably the line of the letter decorated with a braid of ribbons punctuated with floral motifs, which is reminiscent of the line decoration of the present initial "D" (Trinity). Gemstone and pearl motifs are also found in both initials, as well as a small red disc motif with white dots (almost like a small strawberry), which is very characteristic and is found in both initials. On the artist, see A. Garzelli, Miniatura Fiorentina del Rinascimento, 1985, II, figs. 1092-1096; D. Galizzi in M. Bollati, ed, Dizionario biografico dei miniatori italiani, 2004, pp. 33-34.
