Large volume in-8, red morocco, ornamented frame with gilt fillets, and four large rocaille spandrels, ornamented spine, interior frame with gilt fillets, ivory lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Simier). Famous edition, one of the jewels of the romantic illustrated book. The illustration includes about 450 wood-engraved vignettes, 29 plates printed on mounted chine and 7 portraits, under captioned serpents, engraved by Tony Johannot, Isabey, Paul Huet, Marville, etc., and a coloured map of the Ile de France by Dyonnet. ISSUE WITH 33 ENGLISH ENGRAVINGS on chine appliqué, 15 COLOURED BOTANICAL PLATES and an AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED BY BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE (one page in-8). Some foxing. Spine a little faded, one corner marked.
