CAMUS (Albert).
The Possessed. A play in three acts adapted from Dostoyevsky's novel. Paris, Gallimard, NRF, 1959. In-12, orange morocco, jansenist, spine with gilt title, lining and endpapers of nubuck terre de Sienne, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine, slipcase (P. Goy & C. Vilaine). First edition. One of the 100 copies on vellum pur fil, this one of the 10 hors commerce. Copy of René Char, with this very beautiful letter from Albert Camus: For you, dear René, this prophecy whose truth we suffer together, with the paternal affection of your Albert Camus. Albert Camus (1913-1960) and René Char (1907-1988) had met just after the war, in 1946, and had developed a deep friendship. In September 1958, on the advice of his friend who showed him the region, Camus bought a house in Lourmarin, in the Vaucluse: it was there that he wrote Les Possédés, his last work. The play, premiered on 30 January 1959 at the Théâtre Antoine by Camus himself, was a great success.
