SARTRE (Jean-Paul).
Les Mains sales. Paris, Gallimard, NRF, 1948. In-12, paperback, untrimmed, in burgundy half-maroquin folder and slipcase (Boichot). First edition. One of the 15 first copies on hollande vellum. It is enriched by an autograph leaf, a fragment of a first draft of Les Mains sales, in which Sartre evokes this withered purity which will give the book its title: I still had pure hands [...]. I was angry with him because he had forced me to get my hands dirty for him. Sartre did not retain this formulation in the final version, but replaced it with this expression, which is more forceful: How you value your purity, my little fellow! How afraid you are of getting your hands dirty. Well, stay pure! [...] My hands are dirty. Up to my elbows. I dipped them in shit and blood. Cover washed and restored, the volume rebacked.
