GIRAUDOUX (Jean).
La Folle de Chaillot. Play in two acts. Hors-texte by Christian Bérard. Paris, Bernard Grasset, 1946. In-12, paperback, untrimmed, with full margins, partly uncut. Correction: second edition, published one year after the original edition, illustrated by Bérard. This comedy, written during the Occupation, is one of Jean Giraudoux's most famous. It was only premiered at the Athénée theatre on 22 December 1945, after the author's death, by Louis Jouvet who had just returned from the United States, to music by Henri Sauguet. The sets and costumes of the play were designed by Christian Bérard, one of the main creators of sets and costumes between the two world wars. The triumph was immediate. Considered a prophetic play, La Folle de Chaillot features an eccentric countess who mobilizes the little people of her neighborhood to foil the criminal plans of a group of unscrupulous businessmen in search of money and oil. One of 23 copies on Montval paper, this one nominative, printed for Marguerite Moreno. Copy of Marguerite Moreno (1871-1948), creator of the role of Aurélie, known as the Madwoman of Chaillot; friend of Colette, the actress played the role of the Thénardier in Les Misérables (1934) and acted a lot for Sacha Guitry between 1936 and 1943. It bears this letter from Jean-Pierre Giraudoux, alias Montaigne, the author's son: For Marguerite Moreno, for whom this play was written and thanks to whom it has lived, affectionate and admiring tribute from Giraudoux-Montaigne, March 1946. In addition, it is enriched by an autograph note signed by Louis Jouvet - creator of the role of the ragpicker -, dated 23 December 1946 on the printed letterhead of the Athénée (2 pages): My dear Marguerite, [...] How are you? I am told that you are getting stronger - but do you have a voice? Enough to ensure our New Year's Eve? I'm not going to see you, so as not to tire you out again [...]. Your faithful ragman... Light freckles.
