SARTRE (Jean-Paul).
Les Mouches. Paris, Gallimard, NRF, 1943. In-12, paperback, untrimmed. First edition of one of Jean-Paul Sartre's most famous plays, premiered in June 1943 on the stage of the Théâtre de la Cité. Press service copy, with mention of twelfth edition on the cover. It bears on the false-title this letter signed by Sartre: To B. Bernard Groethuysen (1880-1946), a German writer and philosopher, exerted, like his compatriots Husserl and Heidegger, a certain influence on Sartre's thought. A great reader of Sartre, he wrote to his friend Jean Paulhan in 1938: Sartre fascinates me, as did Jouhandeau and Kafka. But Sartre speaks to me. It was in La Bibliothèque des Idées, a collection founded by Groethuysen and Paulhan in 1927, that Sartre published his philosophical essay L'Être et le néant that same year.
