GUITRY (SACHA).
Frans Hals or "L'Admiration", play in three acts and in free verse. Paris, L'Illustration, 1931. In-4, bradel ivory vellum, gilt on the first cover, cover, slipcase (Binding of the period). First edition. The cover is decorated with a portrait of Sacha Guitry in the role of the Dutch painter and various scenes from the play. Play first performed in March 1931 at the Madeleine theatre in Paris, with Sacha Guitry in the lead role, Pierre Fresnay in the role of Adrien Van Ostade, and Yvonne Printemps as Annette. The outcome of this trio of actors had an air of déjà vu about it; indeed, after falling in love with Yvonne Printemps in Jean de La Fontaine (1916) (see lot n°123), they separated: the actress, who had fallen in love with Pierre Fresnay, left Sacha Guitry the following year and divorced him in 1934. Sacha Guitry did not only try to revive the illustrious painter before our eyes: he treated with the savoury lightness that is in his style a psychological theme that is quite new in the theatre [...]: admiration. One of the 12 copies on japon impérial, this one nominative for Albert Willemetz (1887-1964), librettist and childhood friend of Sacha Guitry. A copy of Sacha Guitry's book, with his gilded figure on the first cover. It is enriched with a photocard of Yvonne Printemps as Annette. Ex-libris André Bernard.
