GUITRY (SACHA).
Sa dernière volonté ou L'optique du théâtre - Comedy in 2 acts. Autograph manuscript signed (s.l.n.d. [circa 1930]), 154 pages in-4 in one volume, softbound, navy basane cover, gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (headpieces heavily rubbed, first cover slightly detached from spine). Complete manuscript, with numerous autograph corrections in ink and blue pencil. The play was first performed on March 27, 1931 at the Théâtre de la Madeleine, with Guitry, Pierre Fresnay, Yvonne Printemps and Pauline Carton. It was given as a complement to Frans Hals. It includes an interesting process of theatre within the theatre: Act I begins with a classic boulevard theatre plot: a devoted friend comes to check on the health of a modest postal worker and the latter, at the point of death, makes known his last wish: if his future widow were to remarry, it would not be to the best friend in the house. This best friend is a playwright in need of inspiration for his next play, and here he finds the subject he is looking for. Act II, in the greatest self-mockery on the part of Guitry, corresponds to the mise en abyme of the playwright's character in front of the creative process. Provenance: Library of André Bernard (ex-libris on the upper back cover).
