The King. Comedy in four acts. Paris, Librairie théâtrale, 1909. In-12, fawn morocco, boards and spine decorated with a cold, gilt and mosaic decoration representing a theatre curtain, in the centre of the first board an oval cartouche charged with a royal crown standing out on a gilt trellis, spine with two large nerves bearing the gilt title, double internal fillet, vellum lining, gilt edges, untrimmed, cover and spine, lemon half-maroquin folder with covers, case (V. Granghaud) First edition. Political and social satire first performed at the Variety Theatre on April 24, 1908; ten months later, in February 1909, the 200th anniversary of this comedy was celebrated with a grand costume party at the Élysée-Palace. One of the 2 extremely rare copies on japon, this one full of various documents: - A postcard of the castle of Eyssendières written by Robert de Flers' father. - A L.A.S. from Robert de Flers written to his dear little Simone (3 pages in-12, on the letterhead of the Figaro, envelope kept). - A letter announcing the birth of Robert de Flers. - An undated letter from Robert de Flers to Mme André Maurois (one page in-12, on the letterhead of Le Figaro, envelope kept). - A coupon for a box for the revival of Le Roi at the Comédie-Française on May 10, 1949, for two seats, in the name of Mr. and Mrs. André Maurois. Interesting mosaic binding by Victor Granghaud, bookbinder in Paris. His widow succeeded him after 1940. From the Simone André Maurois library, with her bookplate.
