BATAILLE (Henry).
The Mask. La Marche nuptiale. Paris, Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1908. In-12, red half-maroquin with corners, spine with gilt title, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (Habersaat). First edition. Le Masque was first performed at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in 1902, and La Marche nuptiale, the author's masterpiece, three years later on the same stage. Very nice signed letter from the author to the Parnassian poet Catulle Mendès (1841-1909): To Catulle Mendès, one of the three or four great lighthouses on the shore, salute to the little boat. Enriched with an autograph letter (2 pages in-12) from Berthe Bady (1868-1921), companion of Lugné-Poe and muse of Henry Bataille, for whom she played the role of Grace de Plessans in La Marche nuptiale; the actress thanks Catulle Mendès for an article written about the play: Dear Mr. Mendès, We do not know how to thank you. We are both moved and touched by so much affectionate care to understand and explain to others. I am very, very proud of what you want to think of me. As for Bataille, your article is his best reward [...]. The poor boy is still suffering at the moment and is still unable to go and kiss you.
