ZAMACOÏS (Miguel).
The Jesters. A play in four acts in verse. Paris, Librairie théâtrale, 1907. In-8, raspberry morocco, large frame decorated with straight fillets, dotted lines and a line of gilt bells and a garnet mosaic listel, large gilt iron with a marotte at the corners, set on an oval piece of garnet morocco, spine decorated with mosaic mandorles and gilt fillets, inner frame decorated with straight fillets and gilt bells, garnet morocco lining, burgundy silk guard, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, half morocco folder with band and slipcase (Noulhac rel. - J. Chadel del.). First edition. Most famous play by Miguel Zamacoïs (1866-1955), created on January 25, 1907 at the Sarah Bernhardt theatre and set in a castle in the 16th century. Superb copy given by the author to the jeweller and bibliophile Henri Vever (1854-1942), who had it covered with one of his famous jeweller's bindings. It bears two autograph letters from Zamacois to Vever, the first of which, dated March 1922, is inscribed on the title page and accompanies a large original watercolour drawing signed by the author: Ainsi peut-être était, ou peut-être autrement, le coin où s'éveilla Solange au Bois Dormant! Warmest regards to you Henri Vever. The second sending is affixed on a blank sheet, dated May 1922 and accompanied by 4 verses extracted from scene VIII of act 3. Exquisite lined and mosaic binding, perfectly executed by Noulhac according to a decoration designed by Jules Chadel (1870-1941), illustrator and decorator whom Henri Vever called upon at the beginning of the century to design the decorations of the bindings of the books in his library. The copy is quoted by Crauzat (La Reliure française de 1900 à 1925, t. I, p. 175) and was included in the Bibliotheca Wittockiana's exhibition of bindings, Une Vie, une collection. Cinq siècles d'art et d'histoire à travers le livre et sa reliure (2008, n°111).
