ROSTAND (Edmond).
L'Aiglon. Drama in six acts, in verse. Paris, Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1900. In-8, mounted on tabs, green morocco with grosgrain, wide gilt border with five fillets and small scattered fleurons, ornate spine, interior framing with gilt and cold-stamped fillets and motifs, brocaded silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine, case (Ch. Meunier 1924). First edition of this play first performed on March 15, 1900 in Paris at the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre. The frontispiece features a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt in the title role of the Duke of Reichstadt, based on a drawing by Louise Abbema. The cover is decorated with a gilt composition in relief by René Lalique on the first plate. Copy on japon, nominative printed for the critic Jules Huret (1863-1915), author of a biography of Sarah Bernhardt with a preface by Rostand. Unique copy, enriched with 8 beautiful original watercolour compositions, each occupying the whole page, signed A. Bligny, probably Albert Bligny (1849-1908), a French painter and illustrator from the Château-Thierry region, in the Aisne, specializing in military subjects. Back cover.
