ROSTAND (Edmond).
L'Aiglon. Drama in six acts, in verse. Paris, Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1900. In-8, fir green morocco, jansenist, lavaliere morocco lining set with a gilt fillet and bordered with a gilt floral garland, frame drawn by olive branches, green moire endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover, case (Marius Michel). First edition of this play created on March 15, 1900 in Paris at the theatre Sarah Bernhardt. The frontispiece features a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt in the title role of the Duke of Reichstadt, after a drawing by Louise Abbema. The cover is decorated on the first plate with a gilded composition in relief by René Lalique. One of the very rare copies printed on green paper, this one bearing the author's beautiful signed letter to his friend Louis Barthou: À Louis Barthou, ministre, bibliophile et pyrénéen. Cambo, 1908. Edmond Rostand. Only a handful of copies were printed on this paper in the colours of the Empire, all of which were destined for people close to the author: Octave Mirbeau and Jean Richepin, for example, each had one printed in their name. The Barthou copy, on the other hand, is not nominative and seems to be the only one among these to have been "really" offered by Rostand. The mailing testifies to Rostand's esteem and admiration for his friend, and is evocative of the Pyrenean roots shared by the two men: while Louis Barthou (1862-1934) was born in the Basses-Pyrénées and first served as a lawyer at the bar in Pau and then as a deputy for that department, Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) was an adopted Pyrenean who lived the last years of his life in the remarkable Villa Arnaga in Cambo-les-Bains. The copy is enriched with an autograph note signed by Rostand on Villa Arnaga letterhead: Dear Sir, please believe in my great joy and my deep sympathy. You know that for a long time I have been hoping for the return to business of a man whom you have taught me to love; I am very, very happy. Would you, Mr. Minister, pay my respects to Madame Barthou; my wife remembers her well. Edmond Rostand. A very fine and precious copy, in a perfect lined binding by Marius Michel. From the libraries of Louis Barthou (II, 1935, n°862), Pierre Guérin (I, 1938, n°331) with his ex-libris drawn by Laboureur, and R. Callens.
