JARRY (Alfred).
Ubu roi. Drama in five acts in prose, restored in its integrity as it was performed by the puppets of the Théâtre des Phynances in 1888. Paris, Éditions du Mercure de France, 1896. In-16, brown half-maroquin bradel, floral patterned paper boards, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed, illustrated cover (Ateliers Laurenchet). First edition, decorated with 2 woodcut drawings by Alfred Jarry representing Monsieur Ubu. Famous play composed by Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), created in December 1896 at the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre, directed by Lugné-Poe, with Firmin Gémier in the leading role of Father Ubu. Considered a precursor of the surrealist movement and the theatre of the absurd, it inaugurates the cycle created by the author around this grotesque character (Ubu cocu, Les Almanachs du père Ubu, Ubu enchaîné, etc.). Since 2009, the play has entered the repertoire of the Comédie-Française. A copy of the current edition, bearing a signed letter from Jarry to the actor and playwright Georges Docquois (1863-1927): Copy offered to Georges Docquois, sympathetically Alfred Jarry. Soiled cover.
