COPPÉE (François).
For the crown. Drama in five acts, in verse. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1895. In-8, plum soft basane, name Angèle gilt in a corner of the first plate, smooth spine decorated with a gilt fleuron and bearing the same title, gilt head, cover (Binding of the time). First edition. If we are to believe the journalists of the time, this play was a great success on the stage of the Odéon where it was performed from January 19, 1895: for some, Coppée reached the peak of his art, for others he was in the company of the tragic grandeur of Corneille and the expressive scope of Victor Hugo. Signed letter from the author on the false title: To the Beauty Madame Angèle, / One of her subjects, / François Coppée. A copy containing numerous indications in pencil and ink for the staging, with the stage plan and set for four acts, and an original drawing in colour representing the costume of an actress, signed L. Édouard Fournier (flying drawing). Signature on the cover: Albert-Lambert fils. Endpapers and a few leaves detached, traces of wetness notably on the edge of the volume with several leaves consolidated. Spine faded and stained, rubbing to the binding.
