[CLAUDEL (Paul)].
The City. S.l.n.d. Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1893]. In-8, boards entirely covered with a guilloche steel plate, striated border forming a frame with spandrels trimmed with nails, title engraved on two lines in the centre of the first board, burgundy morocco spine, brocaded silk lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover, half-black morocco case by Alain Devauchelle (period binding). First edition. First version of this play in three acts which was rewritten and re-published in 1901. The play was first performed in 1955 on the stage of the Théâtre National Populaire. One of the 25 first copies on hollande. Autograph letter from Paul Claudel to his friend Maurice Pottecher (1867-1960), a theatre-goer and writer who founded the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang (Vosges) in 1895. The two men, who had common ties to the Vosges (La Bresse for Claudel and Bussang for Pottecher), had become friends in the early 1890s and were both members of a literary group that included Marcel Schwob, Léon Daudet, Jules Renard and Camille Mauclair. Spectacular binding decorated with machined and clotted steel plates. Impressive use of this material which is undoubtedly a production of the Pottecher family factory, located in Bussang and specialized in small metalwork. Some light freckling.
