Les Noces corinthiennes. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1876. In-12, fawn calf, gilt fillet, boards decorated with a modelled decoration depicting an acroterium ornamented with large acanthus leaves, the pedestal bearing the words Hippias de Thera / son of Lakon and Daphne / daughter of Hermas, spine decorated, interior Greek, lining and endpapers of moire, edges gilt (N. Ralli) First edition of this parnassian drama in verse which was performed on the stage of the Odéon in 1902. Beautiful signed letter from the author on the false title: To Marie-Thérèse Piérat, who, by creating the role of Daphné, gave it the most touching beauty and irresistible charm, the delighted and grateful old author. Creator of the main role of the play, Marie-Thérèse Piérat (1885-1934) was hired that same year, 1902, at the Comédie-Française of which she became a member three years later, at the age of twenty. Very rare and beautiful modelled binding by Nicolas Ralli, bookbinder born in Odessa in 1861, who died in Paris in 1936: its decoration fits perfectly with Anatole France's work, whose plot is set in Corinth in the 4th century and revolves around the impossible love between Daphne and Hippias. The bindings of this artist, rare on the market, are highly sought after. Upper jaws cracked, top cover damaged. Spine a little faded.
