LECONTE DE LISLE.
The Erinnyes. Ancient tragedy in two parts, in verse. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1873. In-12, royal blue chagrin, gilt fillet, author's name and title stamped in gilt on the first plate, ornate spine, interior scrollwork, lining and endpapers of light blue moire, gilt head (period binding). First edition. The play was first performed at the Odéon theatre on 6 January 1873, with music by Jules Massenet. This copy was given by Leconte de Lisle to Madame de Heredia, wife of the poet and mother of Marie de Régnier, known by her pen name Gérard d'Houville. José-Maria de Heredia had met Leconte de Lisle (1818-1894) in 1863. He was his most faithful disciple and one of his closest friends. It was partly thanks to the leader of Parnassian poetry that he published his famous collection Les Trophées in 1893. Spine and edges of boards a little darkened.
