OFFENBACH (Jacques), Henry MEILHAC et Ludovic HALÉVY.
La Vie parisienne. Play in five acts. Second edition. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1867. In-12, midnight blue morocco, jansenist, gilt title on the spine, crown and initials on the tail, inner lace, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (Binding of the period). A play in five acts, first performed on October 31, 1866 at the Palais-Royal theatre. It was a great success, as a journalist recalled a few years later in the columns of L'Univers illustré (n°967, October 7, 1873): We have reviewed this famous Vie parisienne, which was performed for seven consecutive months at the Palais-Royal, in the memorable year of the Champ-de-Mars Universal Exhibition. It seemed as if the phalanx of foreigners, disembarked from the four cardinal points, obeyed the same order. La Vie Parisienne and La Grande-Duchesse, La Grande-Duchesse and La Vie Parisienne, were their first concerns, and they were not at peace until they had secured seats for these two fashionable plays. Sovereigns and highnesses followed the common law; Schneider and Zulma Bouffar were stars from whose attraction the Czar, the Emperor of Austria, the Prince of Wales, the Khedive of Egypt, and many other crowned personages could not escape. [...] They have become legendary, these types born of the dizzying imagination of the authors: the Baron of Gondremark, the Swiss admiral, the general Puerto Rico, the diplomat Manchabal, the bootmaker Frick, the table d'hôte major, the Brazilian. Personal copy of Jules Renard, known as Draner (1833-1900), the designer of the play's costumes. Belgian draughtsman and caricaturist, the artist collaborated with several Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Charivari, L'Illustration, Paris-comique, L'Éclipse and Journal pour rire. He also designed the costumes for another of Offenbach's opera buffas: La Grande duchesse de Gérolstein. A unique copy, bearing a signed letter from the authors to Draner, who illustrated it with 136 remarkable original watercolours. It is also enriched with the following items: - 2 L.A.S. from Draner (5 pages in-12), each with an original pen-and-ink drawing by him. - 2 visiting cards from Draner, each decorated with an original watercolour. - 3 autograph notes signed by the authors. - an issue of Hommes du jour devoted to Draner, with a caricatured portrait of the artist. From the library of Count Alexandre Keller, with crowned cipher on the tail and engraved armorial bookplate bearing the motto Vaillant et Veillant.
