La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein, opéra-bouffe in three acts. Music by Jacques Offenbach. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1867. In-12, bradel ivory vellum, boards each decorated with an original watercolour by Draner, smooth spine bearing the title painted in full, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (Period binding). First edition of this opera-bouffe by Jacques Offenbach, on a libretto by Meilhac and Halévy, premiered at the Exposition Universelle de Paris on April 12, 1867 at the Théâtre des Variétés. Unique copy, illustrated with 116 original watercolours by Draner, of which 114 are in the text and 2 are on the cover of the binding. Jules Renard, known as Draner (1833-1900), Belgian cartoonist and caricaturist, collaborated to several Parisian newspapers such as Charivari, L'Illustration, Paris-comique, L'Éclipse and Journal pour rire. He also designed theatrical costumes, full of fantasy, for many of Offenbach's operas, including La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein and La Vie parisienne. Spine a little soiled.
