MONNIER (Henry).
Les Bas-fonds de la Société. Paris, Jules Claye, 1862. Large in-8, bradel aubergine long-grained morocco, triple gilt fillet, small gilt satyr's head at the corners, smooth spine decorated with interlacing with gilt fillets and dotted lines, interior fillet, not trimmed (Noulhac). Partly original edition. It contains 8 pieces, the first three of which had already appeared in the Scènes populaires: the others are unpublished and Monnier only obtained with some difficulty the authorization to have them printed. The authorization which was granted to him, thanks to a powerful support, was subordinated to the condition that the book would be printed only in 200 copies, that it would not be put in the trade and placed by the author himself (Vicaire, t. V, col. 1018). Unique copy, illustrated with 9 original watercolours signed by F. Coindre, including a frontispiece and 8 chapter headings. It is also enriched with 4 engravings and 4 original pen-and-ink drawings by Jules Chauvet, on tracing paper, constituting various attempts at a frontispiece. Superb copy. The false title is here printed in black, and blank on the front.
